What is Data Tools Arena?
Data Tools Arena is a community-driven ranking platform for tools, tutorials, and resources in the Microsoft data platform ecosystem. It covers Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, Azure Databricks, and data engineering tooling — curated and ranked by real community engagement rather than paid promotion or editorial opinion alone.
The directory exists because discovering quality data platform tools is difficult. Vendor marketing is everywhere, but practitioner recommendations are scattered across forums, GitHub, and social media. Data Tools Arena brings those recommendations together in one place, ranked by what the community actually explores and uses.
How Rankings Work
Every listed tool accumulates two types of engagement signals:
- Detail views — how many visitors clicked to see the tool's full description, GitHub stats, and links
- Outbound clicks — how many visitors navigated to the tool's website or repository
An Azure Function runs hourly to recompute two scores for each tool:
- All-Time Score — total lifetime engagement, giving weight to established, consistently popular tools
- Trending Score — recent engagement weighted more heavily, surfacing tools gaining momentum right now
Rankings are objective and based solely on visitor behavior. No tool can pay for placement.
What Categories Are Covered
What Gets Listed
All submissions are reviewed before listing. A tool is accepted if it:
- Is genuinely useful to Microsoft data platform practitioners
- Has a working URL and meaningful description
- Is not primarily a commercial product landing page without free tier or open-source component
- Does not duplicate an existing listing
About the Curator
Data Tools Arena was built and is maintained by Andrzej Strzała, a Microsoft data platform practitioner with hands-on experience in Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and Azure data services. The platform grew out of the frustration of manually tracking useful tools and resources scattered across the internet.
